BBQ Chicken, Harmon Brewing Company, Tacoma WA

On our way to Seattle, the family and I stopped for Happy Hour at Tacoma’s Harmon Brewing Company. The brewpub is located in pedestrian friendly downtown Tacoma, all within walking distance to the amazing Glass Museum and waterfront. Before or after your visit to Harmon’s, take a walking tour of the downtown scene. You’ll be pleasantly rewarded.

For the Friday night Happy Hour, we decided on the HH special: a half (yes, a half!) BBQ chicken with fries, $3 each. Pints were also $3 each. We ordered 3 BBQ chickens, all for $9. I can’t feed the family at McFastFood for nine bucks.

The picture of the chicken featured on the site does not do justice to the actual chicken that was placed in front of us. The chicken was moist and succulent, with a slathering of BBQ sauce on top. And you get a lot of it. My 18 year old son called it “amazing”. It made the joy of licking fingers all the more fun. And you get a healthy serving of really good, crunchy fries. Pull out the napkins.

A note of caution: Arrive early, the above advertised chicken is offered to the patron “until it’s gone!”

For my microbrew, I had the award winning Puget Sound Porter.  This porter is a slightly sweet, English style ale, easily drinkable with food, or even by itself. Harmon’s brewer likes to make dark beer: this porter has 8 different malted barleys, including Pale Chocolate and dark German barley. You almost want to eat the menu reading the description.

If you are an outdoor, Northwesty sort of person, you’ll also enjoy the décor of Harmon’s. The restaurant features period photographs of Mt. Rainier climbs, along with photos of celebrity climbers.
