Duck Confit Pizza, Yaletown Brewing Co., Vancouver, BC

In downtown Vancouver, BC, on a warm Pacific Northwest August evening, my hiking friend and I found ourselves inside Yaletown Brewing Company. We had just finished a pleasant 90 mile hike from Washington State to Canada and were famished for some seriously good brewpub food. And so, looking at the menu, my eyes settled on the Duck Confit Pizza. Duck Confit Pizza? Why? Why not?

The pizza offers tender confit duck on top of a crunchy baked crust. Throw in Roquefort blue cheese, toasted walnuts, fresh arugula and dried cranberries, the dish is magnificent blend of tastes and textures. The juicy confit duck contrasts delightfully with the salty blue cheese; the bitter walnuts meld with the sweet cranberries. In all, an unconventional and scrumptious pizza. If you want to try something fun and different, consider the confit duck pizza at Yaletown.

For my brew, I chose the refreshing Hills Special Wheat Beer. This golden coloured cloudy wheat came across as an eminently drinkable summer brew, spicy and light. The wheat went drank down smoothly, with a crisp, palate cleansing taste. Along with the pizza, this wheat offered a perfect accompaniment for a warm August evening in Vancouver. My hiking partner chose the picturesque Helmcken Black and Tan. I'll have to try it the next time I'm in Vancouver.
