Vegan Dolmades, Broad Ripple Brewpub, Indianapolis IN

Finding myself in Indiana for a college reunion, my wife, a college friend and I stopped by Broad Ripple Brewpub. Looking at the menu, I saw an item that I had never seen before in a brewpub: Vegan Dolmades. Naturally, I ordered them.

Rolled in grape leaves, the dolmades come with organic brown rice, chick peas, tomato, garlic and parsley, and simmered in vegan chicken broth. The dolmades are served chilled with assorted steamed vegetables, a delicious portion of hummus, and warm pita triangles.

Vegan Dolmades
What a delightful lunch! This is a meal that one lingers over slowly; taking a nibble of a dolma, a small forkful of hummus, a spear of vegetable, and a bite of pita, experiencing all the subtle flavors and textures of this Mediterranean inspired meal. Then take a sip of beer, and repeat.

For my brew, I  chose the ESB. This 1991 Great American Beer Festival Gold Medal Winner drank down as a well balanced ale with the sweetness of malt and a definite hoppy aftertaste, which suited my Northwest taste buds.

More and more, brewpubs are experimenting with exceptional dishes that reflect imagination and excitement. The next time you are visiting Indianapolis, drive up  to the Broad Ripple  neighborhood and check out the brewpub. It's worth the visit.

Before eating our lunch, we took a leisurely stroll along the Monon Trail, which runs just outside the brewpub. The  16.7 mile trail is a former rail line that now serves both bicyclists and pedestrians. Before or after your meal at Broad Ripple Brewpub, you might want to check out the pleasant Monon Trail.
