Carnitas Tacos, Coronado Brewing Co. Coronado, CA

They were brewing when I walked into Coronado Brewing for lunch, and the pub had that wonderful thick, sweet and malty air that brewpub habitués and home brewers have come to know.

However, I decided to sit outside at one of the sidewalk tables and people watch-SoCal style. Looking at the menu, I chose the special for the day: Carnitas Tacos.

Carnitas Tacos
Piled high with guacamole, pico de gallo, and shredded cheese, the tacos come with huge chunks of pork carnitas. Sprinkling the tacos with lemon and pouring on the salsa, the carnitas were a juicy mouthful, a medley of rich flavors that made for a delight of pork goodness. The salsa was picante enough to play off well against the pork. The pico de gallo and the mellow guacamole added a pleasant taste and texture to the meal as well. Coronado puts plenty of pork carnitas on the two corn tortillas so that you have a filling, yet moderate lunch. The special also came with a side salad.

For my brew, I decided on the Orange Avenue Wit. The wit is brewed with orange peel and local orange blossom honey, along with coriander. Sprinkling a wedge of orange into the beer, you have a mildly spicy beer that is clean and easy to drink. It went especially well with the carnitas, cutting through the pork juices, leaving a refreshing taste to the palate. It's a good beer.

Coronado Brewing is located on friendly Orange Avenue. After your visit, it is a short stroll to the waterfront of San Diego Bay, where you can sit on one of the park benches and view downtown San Diego. Also, while in Coronado, make sure you visit the magnificent beaches on the other side of the island. They are impressive.
