Hangtown Fry, Magnolia Gastropub and Brewery, San Francisco, CA

Hanging out on a pleasant Saturday morning on upper Haight Street, I drop by Magnolia Gastropub for a much anticipated brunch. And brunch is the Hangtown Fry, an impressive omelette of fried oysters, bacon, spinach, caramelized onion and a crisp slice of grilled bread.
Hangtown Fry
The fried oysters were calling for first bite. The juicy oysters rewarded nicely. Breaded and crispy fried on the outside, the oysters were succulent and wonderfully good on the inside.  I could have eaten just oysters for brunch today. However, the omelette provided the palate with chewy nibbles of bacon along with the caramelized sweet onions and really good spinach to make Saturday brunch a healthy and tasty endeavor. The Hangtown Fry is a perfect start for a weekend morning brunch; and the fried oysters make the meal. Enjoy.

For my morning brew, I chose Magnolia's Proving Ground IPA over coffee. 'Nothing wrong with beer for breakfast since there is a long history of drinking liquid bread for breakfast and I happily followed precedent. Magnolia's IPA on first sip has a noticeable hop flavor followed by a pleasant sweetness from the malt. Because of the heavy hop flavor, however, the IPA seemed to overwhelm the omelette. A better choice, in my view, would have been a warm bodied Porter or Brown Ale. Next time.

Upper Haight Street and Magnolia Gastropub give the visitor an opportunity to have a relaxing weekend morning brunch in a funky-cool neighborhood. After having a great brunch, it's worth it to take a stroll along Haight Stree district and take in the colorful Painted Ladies that greet you.
