Finding ourselves in U. of Oregon Duck country on a Friday afternoon, my wife and I stopped by Steelhead Brewing for lunch. We both ordered the special of the day: Soup and Sandwich. Steelhead's soup de jour was, not surprisingly on a Friday in the Pacific Northwest, clam chowder. Look at that bowl. Yummy.

Clam Chowder

And what a magnificent chowder it was! The special was truly special. Steelhead doesn't give you a mere cup of chowder; instead, Steelhead gives you a large bowl of clam chowder that is a meal by itself. The chowder arrived thick and creamy, with hefty chunks of potatoes, succulent clams and bits of bacon to fill out the appetite and reward the taste buds with real a chowder event.
In fact, the clam chowder was a such a magnificent meal unto itself, that I never got to try my sandwich: the turkey and cheddar sandwich. (Disclaimer: I shamelessly ate a late breakfast of an equally large and shameless cinnamon roll with a large choco-mocha coffee at a local cafe prior to lunch).
At home the next day, I finished my brewpub adventure. The half sandwich of turkey and cheddar cheese was a perfect light lunch. Melted cheddar and generous slices of turkey added great texture to the sandwich and filled out the meal. Thinly sliced purple onion, tomato and lettuce made the sandwich complete.
For my beer, I chose the Hazy Hef. This was an unfiltered beer and came with the requisite lemon wedge, which I dutifully squeezed into the cloudy Hef. This was easy drinking, the citrus of lemon along with the hefe wheat made the brew citrusy refreshing and emminently drinkable.
