Meatball Sub, Mash Tun Brewpub, Portland OR

This was the second time I had visited Mash Tun Brewpub and I still walked away cheerfully chipper experiencing this friendly, funky brewpub and its funkier neighborhood. The Mash Tun is located in the Alberta Arts District, a Northeast Portland neighborhood known for its arts, restaurants and shopping. The clientele ranges from hipsters, hippies, bohemians types, to regular folks, just like me.

The menu is mostly sandwiches, burgers, soups and salads. That was OK by me, since Mash Tun comes across as an earthy, bluesy type of pub reflecting the surrounding neighborhood and a sandwich would fill the need nicely. I asked for the Meatball Sub.

Meatball Sub

The sub came on a philly roll with the required 3M's: three big, chunky meatballs, smothered with melted mozzarella and marinara. Along with thin, crispy fries, this was a full meal. Splashing malt vinegar on the fries, you grab your fork and dig in on the crunchy fries. You need to use a knife and fork to eat the sub, or otherwise, it would fall apart since there is so much meat and cheese inside the roll. A delicious and filling pub sandwich. I would recommend it if you want to fill up on a hearty meal.

For my beer, I chose the Razorback Red, a German style alt bier, which drinks down sweet and malty. The reddish hue of the ale provides a visual treat as well. With the alt and the sandwich, the meal is a righteous meal for a rainy, Northwest evening.

The Mash Tun also offers guest beers such as Ninkasi, Lagunitas, and others. The brewpub is dog friendly on the patio for you pooch lovers, has free pool and jukebox, Wi-Fi and darts. On Tuesdays, pints are 2.50 and pitchers are 8.50. Think Tuesdays if you want a deal.
