Fish-N-Chips, The Wet Dog Cafe & Astoria Brewing Co., Astoria, OR

Finding ourselves in Astoria, OR, my wife and I dropped in to a familiar brewpub that we had visited many times before, The Wet Dog Cafe & Astoria Brewing Co.

And not being adventurous and knowing a good thing, we always order the same: the Wild Combo Fish-N-Chips. The wild combo features Pacific Cod, North West Salmon, and Albacore Tuna, which allows you to taste the three types of fish in one eating. The plate comes with crunchy fish, crunchy fries, and not crunchy coleslaw.

Combo Fish-N-Chips
Beer battered and deep fried in the brewery's DaBomb Blond Ale, the fish arrives hot, crispy on the outside and moist and tender on the inside. One bites into the cod, then tries the tuna, and then the salmon, all the while luxuriating on the different tastes and textures of the three. Take a sip of beer, then repeat. It's fun eating. Along with the fries and coleslaw, the Combo is a unique treat to sample three tastes of fish in one sitting.

For my beer, I chose the Poop Deck Porter. I always like porters on chilly, windy and wet Northwest days. The porter came as a slightly sweet, rich, malty brew. Easy to drink by itself or with food.

Marionberry Cobbler
For dessert, we couldn't resist the Marionberry Cobbler. Made fresh in the Wet Dog kitchen, the cobbler is filled with Oregon marionberries and topped with a golden crust, heated, and then topped with vanilla bean ice cream. Along with a pint (16 ounce) of Cappuccino, this is brewpub decadence at its finest.

The Wet Dog Cafe is located on the banks of the mighty Columbia River. While eating your fill and quaffing your brew, you can watch ocean going ships enroute to Portland. After eating, walk to the dock and look over the rail; maybe you'll see some sea lions below begging for restaurant leftovers. Shameless critters.
