BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich, Widmer Gasthaus Pub, Portland OR

Finding myself in downtown Portland during Happy Hour, I decided to drop by the Widmer Brothers' Gasthaus Pub. There, perusing the menu, my eyes locked on the BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich. Yummy.

BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich

Widmer's pulled pork is house smoked. The sandwich is piled high with pulled pork and BBQ sauce on top of a fresh kaiser bun. Along with the ubiquitous pickle, the sandwich comes with a Widmer Sisters potato salad, Bourbon Bock BBQ sauce as a side, and a slice of melted cheddar cheese.

The pulled pork is a drippy concoction of flavors that assault the taste buds. Juicy and succulent, the pulled pork is a classic of the sloppy joe-themed sandwiches. With bits and pieces of pork falling onto the plate, the eater first bites into the sandwich, chews, and then after finishing, collects the stray bit of pork on the plate. The vinegar flavored potato salad proved to be a complementary  counterpoint to the the sweetness of the BBQ pork.

Widmer's Flagship Brew: Hefeweizen

For my beer, I elected the hefeweisen. This gold medal winner at both the GABF and World Beer Cup is the Widmer Brother's flagship brew. The "hef" came as a palate cleansing drink with a pleasant citric and crisp taste. Due top its perceived lightness, the beer was easy to quaff down after a few bites of the BBQ pulled pork.This beer is not a sipping kind of beer.

The Gasthaus is located in a charming old building built in 1887 in the lower Mississippi.neighborhood. With easy parking at the back of the Gasthaus, a visit to the brewpub offers the brewpub patron a pleasant visit to one of Portland's most historic brewpubs.
