Cheeseburger with Cajun Tots, McMenamins Boon's Treasury, Salem, OR

Summer, Happy Hour and sitting in the outdoor patio of McMenamins Boon's Treasury brings us to a happy hour favorite: Cheeseburger and Cajun Tots. This 1/4 lb. all natural ground beef cheeseburger costs you 5 bucks, throw in the cajun tots for $2.50 and you have a real pub meal at fast food prices. And you get to drink a pint of craft brew that you can't find at Mickey D's.

Cheeseburger with Cajun Tots

Biting into the burger you get a juicy mouthful of beef savored with zesty Tillamook cheese. McMenamins meats come from Country Natural Beef, a regional co-op of 120 family ranches providing hormone free meats. Filling and satisfying, the burger is a gourmet version of the usual standby. 

However, the real star of the show is the generous serving of 'tater tots. Crunchy on the outside and steamingly moist on the inside, the tots are a ritual in eating: too hot to pop the entire morsel into your mouth, you are required to bite off an end. Then, while watching steam escape lazily from the remainder, you munch on the spicy cajun nugget of potato. Finish and repeat. The tots come with a peppercorn ranch for dipping purposes if you like.

For my beer, I chose the delightful Ruby Ale. Made with Oregon raspberries, the Ruby came sweet, light, and hearty, with the slight tartness of the citrus raspberries. Paired with the burger and tots, this fruit beer drank down easily this summer afternoon.

Boon's Treasury

Boon's Treasury is located in an old brick building dating from the time of Oregon statehood. Once a general store, treasury, and tavern, the building exudes the ambience of Oregon history. The patrons were a relaxed bunch, conversing quietly while sipping their beers.
