Brewpub Grub: Bits N Pieces Appetizer, Karl Strauss Brewing Co., La Jolla, CA

Wanting a quick brewpub grub snack, I drop by Karl Strauss Brewing in the beach town of La Jolla. I decide on the provocative Bits N Pieces appetizer. This appetizer is duck fat-bake pizza dough with rosemary, topped with pecorino cheese, along with an intriguing truffle dip.

Duck Fat-Baked Pizza Bits

The texture of the baked pizza dough was more like soft bread sticks, a light crust on the outside and moist bread-like dough on the inside. The duck fat gave the pizza morsels a rich flavor that along with the grated pecorino cheese made for a salty, tangy tasting experience. And by dipping the appetizer into the truffle dip, the Bits N Pieces Appetizer made for an enjoyable brewpub snack. Try it.

For my brew, I chose the popular Red Trolley Ale. On sipping this beer, this World Beer Cup gold medal winner had a sweet and malty taste to it, with a husky hoppy bite to it following. This is not a heavy brew, along with a moderate appetizer, the Red Trolley Ale is a good choice for a mid-afternoon beer that satisfies without filling.

If you are in the downtown San Diego area, the centrally located Karl Strauss brewpub is convenient for a visit offering the same menu. Either is certainly worth a drop-in if you like brewpub food and brew.
