Scottish Pie, Portland Brewing Company, Portland OR

Tucked away in NW Portland's industrial area, one finds the iconic Portland Brewing Company, also remembered by the old timers as MacTarnahans and Pyramid. It gets confusing, this, unless you are a Portlander and you know your craft brew history. Anyway, they're back.

For dinner, I chose the Scottish Pie. This baked dish comes as a bowl of meat pie topped with mashed potatoes and cheddar cheese. Sauteed seasonal vegetables come as a side.
Cottage Pie
PBC's cottage pie arrived as a hearty concoction of decent sized chunks of beef. Scooping up a taste, the beef released all the delicious goodness of their beefy juices. The melted cheddar melded nicely with the mashed potatoes, providing a creamy taste to go with the savory beef. And hats off to the seasonal vegetable, the green beans were cooked to just right: still crisp and fresh to the taste.

For my brew, I chose the Rose Hip Gold. This seasonal Belgian style ale drank down with a sweet and easy taste to it.  PBC throws a generous amount of rose hips into the brew kettle to give the the brew a pleasant citrus flavor to the beer. I've never had a beer with rose hips before, but it seems fitting coming from a brewpub that shares its name with the Rose City.

The large number of beer drinking patrons was a surprise. It seems that Portland Brewing is a popular stop for the after-work crowd before going home.
