Pad Thai with Tempeh, Big Horse Ales, Hood River, OR

Perched on a hillside overlooking the wind surfing paradise of Hood River, Big Horse Ales offers the visitor a room with a view: The mighty Columbia River. Climbing three sets of stairs gets you there and is worth every barometric step.

For my visit and lunch, I chose the tempting Pad Thai with Tempeh. I love Pad Thai and couldn't resist. The dish arrived with blackened tempeh, cabbage and sliced carrots over a hefty serving of noodles.
Pad Thai with Tempeh
This was real good pad thai. Fried and blackened to a toasty crispness, the tempeh had a pleasing nutty flavor to the taste that melded well with the delicious rice noodles. The sliced carrots and cabbage gave a surprising peppery spice attachment to the meal. In all, a true brewpub grub treat.

For my brew, I chose the Pump House Porter. On taking the first sip, I noted a distinct and welcomed smokiness to the brew. Thick and mellow, the porter is a medium body ale that went well with the lighter vegetarian pad thai.

If you are still thirsty for more fine Oregon craft beer, Big Horse Ales is within easy walking distance to two other brewpubs in town: Full Sail Tasting Room and Pub and Double Mountain Brewery and Taproom. They are worth a visit if you like craft beer and good pub food. Enjoy.
